Distance Learning Resources for ELLs

Did you know that 1 in 3 OUSD students is an English Language Learner and 1 in 9 is a newcomer? As we engage our students in distance learning, we must keep our language learners' needs central to our planning and instruction. Essential Practices for ELLs, Distance Learning Edition

Essential Practices for ELLs during Distance Learning

ELLMA has grounded our work over the last 6 years in these five research-based practices. They are important practices for all learners and absolutely critical for ELLs to grow and thrive academically. We have adjusted the Essential Practices to the context of distance learning and added links to aligned resources and tools. We hope they are helpful!

Our Essential Practices are grounded in 3 beliefs:

  • English Language Learners can achieve at high levels with the right supports.

  • The language and culture resources that ELLs bring are tremendous assets to their learning and that of the community.

  • All teachers are responsible for the language development of ELLs.
